Bushi Goya-Ra-Ru (Martial Arts) Instructor Levels

Instructing and development as a martial artist

Learning to coach and instruct others is extremely beneficial and develops skills that extend well beyond the 'dojo' (martial arts training hall). Initially, most people do not relish the task of standing in front of a group of people (or even one person) and teaching them. However, this is precisely why it has value. Through practice of instructing others, communication skills, confidence, planning and observation skills are all improved. These are invaluable tools that can lead to successes in everyday life. With respect to martial arts, having to teach a technique makes us all really think about how (and why) it should be done. This can lead to a greater understanding and often leads to a more rapid improvement in an individuals own training.

Coaching Level

Ability to coach/instruct on a one-to-one basis to a suitable standard. This can be pretty much anyone but is a requirement for Purple-Belt grades who should also have gained experience in teaching small groups of adults or children.

Assistant Instructor Level

Assistant Instructors are fully competent in teaching small groups (Adults and Juniors) and have experience in taking a medium to large size class. A requirement for Brown-Belt grades.

Instructor Level

A requirement for the grade of Senior Brown-Belt. Instructors are competent to teach a whole class unassisted and have demonstrated and understanding of, lesson planning, methods of streaming for different abilities, an appreciation of learning methods and good observation skills.

Black-Belt Instructor

Generally a more experienced instructor who has demonstrated a more in-depth teaching ability and theoretical knowledge by completing the black-belt written assignment.

Senior Black-Belt Instructor

The second degree black-belt is awarded to individuals who have at least 2 years teaching experience after gaining their first degree black belt. They have demonstrated a high level of technical understanding and martial arts teaching ability.

Chief Instructor

Completely and utterly infallible. A bit like the pope. Seriously though, the Chief Instructor is usually responsible for putting together the grading format and syllabus requirements for their particular association or style.
